Theater Kino
Leading Sapporo culture through movies. A mini-theater financed and operated by citizens.
Opened in 1992 as a citizen-financed movie theater with 29 seats, it moved to its current location in 1998 and became a two-theater facility with 63 and 100 seats. Diatomaceous earth from Hokkaido is used on the walls to improve the air quality. Since its opening, the manager, Hiromi Nakajima, has always made it a rule to screen films after actually seeing them, and the theater is well known throughout Japan as a place where one can see films that are not easily distributed by the major film distributors, but are still of high quality. Hiroshi Nakajima, the representative of the Kino Cinema, has been working to create a rich film and video culture in Sapporo by holding "Kino Film Lectures" and "Children's Film Production Workshops" every year.
