SPOT
Hokkaido Makomanai Park
One of the city's best spots for autumn foliage and cherry blossoms was the stage for the Sapporo Olympics, a battle on ice.
In 1972, Makomanai Park was the main venue for the Sapporo Olympics. It is the current "Makomanai Sekisui Heim Ice Arena" where Janet Lin, the bronze medalist in women's single figure skating, captivated people with her spectacular performance. The historic rink is open to the public for a fee during the winter. The park has a 3 km circuit course, where people enjoy running and jogging in summer and walking and skiing in winter. 85 hectares of land is planted with approximately 13,200 trees, of which 50,000 natural trees remain. Some of the trees are over 135 years old, allowing visitors to experience the rich nature of Sapporo. Although the park is known for its autumn foliage, it is also famous for its cherry blossoms, which bloom in early May and are the largest native blooms in a city park.
