Mt. Kukanuma
A friendly mountain dotted with six swamps. The gentle trail makes it ideal for hiking.
Mt. Kukanuma, 1,251m high, is easy to climb even for beginners and is one of the most popular mountains among Sapporo citizens. The mountain is visited by many climbers and hikers throughout the year, including ski mountaineering in winter. The summit area is designated as Type 1 Special Area of Shikotsu-Toya National Park, where you can see the city of Sapporo, Mt. There are six large and small swamps around the mountain, including Soranuma, which is said to be the origin of the mountain's name, and trails lead from Bankei Swamp, Misu Swamp, and Aonuma Swamp. A gentle 8-km trail from the trailhead will take you to the top in about 3.5 hours. On the way, you are sure to see some adorable Ezo chipmunks.
