Lake Mashu
A mysterious lake that shines in Mashu blue
Lake Mashu is called "Kamuito" in the Ainu language. It is a mysterious place known as the Lake of the Gods. Standing on the observation deck, the deep blue water of the lake spreads out before you, so deep you feel like you're being sucked in, and its appearance changes from moment to moment with the movement of the clouds. This blue is called "Mashu Blue," and is a unique color created when the blue of the sky is reflected in the lake water, which boasts some of the world's clearest waters. On windless days, the blue color stands out even more.
The lake is surrounded by steep walls, making it impossible to go down to the lake surface. The area around Lake Mashu is a special protected area of the national park. The mystique of this beautiful, inaccessible lake continues to attract many people even after time has passed.
