Mount Io-zan

The energy of the earth that still continues to erupt
Mount Io-zan is called "Atosanupuri" in Ainu language, meaning "naked mountain. The mountain's surface emits a gurgling plume of smoke, and the air around it is filled with the distinctive smell of sulfur. From the parking lot where the rest house is located, a short walk along the sand and gravel at the foot of the mountain brings you close to the fumaroles. The fumaroles are very dynamic, with many yellow sulfur crystals and the vigorous fumaroles. You can feel the heartbeat of the earth up close.
This place is also an important page in the history of Teshikaga Town. In the past, this mountain prospered from sulfur mining, which led to the construction of a railroad and supported the development of Kawayu Onsen. Why not spend a moment to feel the history of Kawayu Onsen while imagining the lively atmosphere of the past?
