Sosegawa Park
A walking path in the city. Flowers, Art and Waterfront Path
Completed in 2011 along Sosegawa Dori, which divides central Sapporo from east to west. The Sosegawa River was formerly known as Otomo-dori, an irrigation channel built in the Edo period (1603-1867), and in the early Showa period (1926-1989), the riverfront was crowded with circus huts and street vendors. To carry on the atmosphere of that time, a promenade was built in the 820-meter-long park stretching from Minami 4-jo to Kita 1-jo. There are also stairs leading down to the waterfront. The sides of the promenade are decorated with lilacs and dotted with artwork by Eiki Danzuka using bricks. Each section of the trail is designed differently so that visitors can enjoy walking through the park without getting bored. Free guided tours with park staff are also available.
