A hidden flower spot in the center of Sapporo! Lilacs and lilies of the valley decorate Soseigawa Park
The Souseigawa River flows north and south through the center of Sapporo. Souseigawa Park was built along the river. The beautifully maintained park is actually a hidden gem perfect for a leisurely stroll. The lilacs and lilies of the valley are in full bloom right now! Souseigawa Park is a park built on both banks of the Souseigawa River between Kita 1-jo and Minami 4-jo near the TV tower. The park stretches from north to south for about 820m. There is a busy road right next to the park, but when you walk through Souseigawa Park, you will strangely forget that you are in the middle of the city.
Not only is it a great place for a stroll as there are well-maintained sidewalks, but the flowers and plants grown there are soothing and enjoyable for walkers, which may help you forget the hustle and bustle of the city.
In particular, there are 200 lilac trees of 32 varieties, from early to late blooming varieties, so you can enjoy the colorful lilacs and their unique fragrance for a long period of time. There are also 130 Japanese lilac trees, also known as hasidoi, which are best viewed in late June.
Souseigawa Park also has flower beds with a variety of flowers planted, but the most notable is the lily of the valley, which is planted in 35 beds.
The variety is German lily of the valley, and the sight of the small, bell-shaped white flowers hanging in bells and blowing in the wind is truly lovely. The best time to see lily of the valley is in June, so you can enjoy them together with lilacs.
By the way, did you know that the tree of Sapporo is lilac and the flower of Sapporo is lily of the valley? This was decided by a vote of Sapporo citizens in 1960 (Showa 35).
I was once again amazed at the charm of Soseigawa Park, being able to see two of Sapporo's most representative plants at once, right in the heart of the city. We also have a video that shows us walking through Souseigawa Park while looking at the lilacs and lily of the valley, so please take a look if you're interested! If you drop in during your shopping trip, you might find you have an unexpectedly enriching time.
