Kiyokawa Senbonzakura

This road, which was affectionately known as the 'Cosmos Kaido' (Cosmos Road) because cosmos flowers were planted along it, was where the Senbonzakura (Thousand Cherry Trees) project took place in 1985 (Showa 60).

Centered around the Okikawa Children's Association Development Group, it was carried out as a greening activity with the participation of local residents to familiarize children with trees and to make the area a famous spot for cherry blossoms, creating the Senbonzakura Cherry Tree Avenue along the Kamiiso Togeshita Line (Hokkaido Prefectural Road 96) which leads to the Matsumae Domain Hekirichi Jinya Ato, a historic site and place of scenic beauty.

A total of 1,000 trees, consisting of 500 Oyamazakura (Ezo Mountain Cherry) and 500 Somei Yoshino trees, were planted and have been maintained on both sides of the road. Along Hokkaido Prefectural Road 96, heading towards the Matsumae Domain Hekirichi Jinya Ato, Somei Yoshino and mountain cherry trees bloom profusely, creating a scenic cherry blossom driving course that delights drivers.
