Ruins of Togirichi Camp of the Matsumae Domain
With the opening of Hakodate Port, the Shogunate had the Matsumae Domain build a camp to strengthen the defense of the Ezo region. During the Hakodate War of 1868, the camp was burnt to the ground and abandoned by the defenders as a result of the advance of the Shogunate's breakaway army.
The area is now maintained as a historic site park, where visitors can take a walk around the main camp, which still retains the atmosphere of those days, and the tunnel of cherry trees that leads from the road to the camp ruins is known as a cherry blossom viewing spot. In autumn, the autumn leaves inside the camp are a feast for the eyes.
