SPOT
Shimamatsu Soft Stone
The remains of a soft stone quarry can be seen on the left side of the city road that runs north of the former Shimamatsu Station, under the overpass of National Highway 36.
Soft stone is a rock formed from pyroclastic flow deposits and was widely used until the advent of block building materials due to its ease of processing.
Shimamatsu is said to be derived from the Ainu word "shuma-o-map," which means "rocky place. Shimamatsu is said to be the place where the stone material known as Shimamatsu soft stone was extracted, and the soft stone rocks were exposed on the ground surface.
In the Shimamatsu and Mishima areas, stone houses and barns made of this Shimamatsu soft stone still remain, and they evoke the nostalgia and warmth of those days.
