Founded in 1533. The temple is said to have received its mountain name and vestments from Emperor Gosui. Within the precincts of the temple is the famous Nanden cherry tree, "Kurozu-zakura," which has a legend about cherry blossoms. The tree is estimated to be over 300 years old and is the parent tree of the "Nandono" variety of cherry tree, which is representative of Matsumae.
