Makubetsu Town Senju, once, "Hakujin (Chirotto) Village" was called.
Hakujin, in Ainu language, saying "Chirirokuto", "marsh where birds sit"'s meaning.
To Hakujin Village Ainu people settled, that was 1749 (Kan'en 2nd year) is being told, and its many, from Kitami area migrated came, it is said.
Hakujin Kotan (settlement)'s Ainu leader was late Mr. Kikutaro Yoshida who established Ezo Cultural Archaeological Museum, in it, Ainu people's ancestors who left behind valuable cultural properties are preserved.
