Senju, Makuubetsu-cho, was once called "Chilot (Chilot) Village". Hakuto is the Ainu word for "chirirokuto," meaning "swamp where the birds sit. It is said that the Ainu people settled in Shiroto Village in 1749 (Kan'en 2), and many of them are said to have migrated from the Kitami area.
The Ezo Culture and Archaeology Museum, established by the late Kikutaro Yoshida, the Ainu leader of the White Kotan (village), preserves valuable cultural assets left by the ancestors of the Ainu people.
