Shinsennuma Natural Recreation Forest
Located on a plateau over 750m above sea level, Shinsen-numa Natural Recreation Forest is home to numerous lakes, marshes, and wetlands. Approximately 140,000 people visit the forest annually from within and outside of Hokkaido, making it Kyowa Town's most popular tourist spot. Scattered among the forest are four ponds, including the iconic Shinsen-numa, and the magical scenery that changes with the seasons provides a soothing experience for visitors.
Shinsen Numa is said to be the most beautiful, spiritually cleansing, and mystical swamp in the Niseko mountain range. It has been selected by the Forestry Agency as one of Japan's most beautiful recommended national forests. The name comes from the fact that when Toyomatsu Shimoda, the founder of the Boy Scouts of Japan, and his party encountered the mystical swamp, they were impressed by its appearance as a place where gods and immortals reside.
The water reflects the clear blue sky, the scenery stands in a thick mist, the marshlands shine golden, and the scenery changes with the seasons, from when the flowers begin to bloom in June to when the leaves turn red in October. It has a mysterious charm that makes you want to visit again and again.
There is a boardwalk from the parking lot to the swamp, and it takes about 20 to 30 minutes to get there, so even beginners can easily take a stroll.
*During the winter season from late October to late April, Route 66 is closed, making it impossible to travel to Shinsen-numa.
