Kushiro Zoo is one of the largest zoos in Hokkaido and has been popular with locals and tourists alike under the motto, "Touch with Life, Connect with Life. In the Hokkaido Zone, visitors can observe brown bears, Blakiston's fish owls, red-crowned cranes, and other animals unique to Hokkaido up close, and a breeding program for polar bears is being actively promoted in cooperation with zoos nationwide.
