Kita Kogane Kaizuka Park
Kita Kogane Kaizuka is a Jomon Period settlement site located on a hill facing Eruption Bay, and is a component asset of the "Jomon Monuments of Hokkaido and the Northern Tohoku Region" that is being sought for registration as a World Cultural Heritage site (as of March 2021). The entire site covers an area of about 14 hectares, about half of which is open to the public as a historic site park. People of the Jomon period lived at this site approximately 6,000 to 4,000 years ago. Five shell mounds have been discovered at the Kita Kogane Shell Mound, including one of the largest in Hokkaido, and two of them have been reconstructed to give visitors a glimpse of what they were like back then. In these shell mounds, traces of ceremonies in which animal bones were collected and human graves were found, indicating that for the Jomon people, shell mounds were not just a dumping ground but a place like a tomb where they were thankful for the lives of all living creatures. Also, near a spring point in the historic site, a place was found where a ceremony was thought to have been held to offer used stone tools. There is also an information center (closed during winter) that displays earthenware, stone tools, and other artifacts excavated from the ruins, allowing visitors to learn more about the lifestyle and spiritual culture of the Jomon period.
