SPOT
Cape Soya (Monument marking the northernmost point of Japan)
Cape Soya is the northernmost point on Hokkaido's main island. You can see the island of Sakhalin in the distance. The "Monument to the Northernmost Point of Japan" is located at 45 degrees 31 minutes 22 seconds north latitude, at the very tip of Cape Soya, and stands at the very top of Japan. The monument is designed as a triangular pyramid that resembles one ridge of the North Star, the symbol of the northern regions. The letter N in the center of the tower represents "north," and the circle on the base represents "peace and cooperation." There is also a statue of explorer Mamiya Rinzo, and with its magnificent views, it is a commemorative spot that attracts many tourists.
Due to the widening of National Route 238, which made it difficult to see the monument from car windows, and to expand parking spaces, construction work was carried out in 1988 to relocate the monument about 20 meters offshore. Until then, the "Monument at the Northernmost Point of Japan" was 4.53 meters high, in reference to the latitude, but it was rebuilt to be one size larger as it is today.
Many tourists from all over Japan visit this monument to reach the top of Japan. The area around the monument is lined with souvenir shops, accommodations, and restaurants, and is bustling with activity during the tourist season.
