Miharashi Park, Former Iwafune Family Garden (Kosetsuen), a Place of Scenic Beauty
This authentic landscape garden was developed around 1898 (Meiji 31) as a villa for one of the city's wealthy merchants. It features a variety of garden spaces, including a shoin-style garden pavilion, a mountain stream, and a brick greenhouse, and is a beautiful place to see the autumn leaves. In 2001 (Heisei 13), it was designated a "Place of Scenic Beauty" under the Cultural Properties Protection Act, making it the only nationally designated cultural property garden in Hokkaido.
Located on a hill near the Yunokawa Onsen hot spring resort, Miharashi Park includes the landscaped garden "Kosetsuen," which was built as a villa in the 1890s during the mid-Meiji period by the Iwafune family, one of the city's wealthy merchants. The park's vast grounds of over 13.3 hectares (13.3 hectares) are dotted with charming blends of Japanese and Western styles.
The park is dotted with cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, and the grassy area, which is particularly popular as a field trip spot, is surrounded by flowers in full bloom in the spring. In the summer, fireflies fly around the clear stream, and you can even see cicadas emerging from their cocoons. There are also other attractions, such as a brick greenhouse and a garden pavilion built in the shoin style, which incorporates the teahouse style, making it a relaxing space with many attractions.
In autumn, the garden changes completely, attracting many visitors as a scenic spot for viewing autumn leaves. There are about 150 types of garden trees, mainly maples, and you will lose track of time as you stroll through the garden. Since 2009, the "Hakodate MOMI-G Festa" has been held, where the autumn leaves are lit up at night.
The Green Center, which can be used as a rest area, is equipped with terminals and books that allow you to search for information about the trees and wild birds in the park. Free Wi-Fi is also available. There are several restrooms in the large park, but the multi-purpose restroom is located inside the Green Center.
