Yukura Shrine
Immediately after alighting at Yunokawa tram stop. There is a tradition that the serious illness of the 9th generation Matsumae feudal lord (childhood name Senkatsumaru) was completely cured at the hot spring within the precincts. Below the precincts, there is also a monument to the birthplace of Yunokawa Onsen.
Yukura Shrine is immediately near the city tram terminal "Yunokawa" tram stop. It is said to be the birthplace of Yunokawa Onsen, and below the precincts, there is a "Hakodate Yunokawa Onsen Birthplace Monument". As the guardian deity of Yunokawa Onsen, it is widely cherished.
Around 1453 in the Muromachi period, one woodcutter discovered it, and later, as thanks for a disease being cured by hot spring therapy, carved Yakushi Nyorai and enshrined it in a hall, which is said to be the origin. Also, later, the 9th generation lord of the Matsumae Domain, Takahiro (childhood name Senkatsumaru) in 1653 (Jōō 2nd year) fell seriously ill, and by his mother Seiryōin's dream revelation, performed hot spring therapy here, and it is also said that a difficult-to-cure disease was cured. Seiryōin renovated the shrine building and enshrined the Yakushi Nyorai statue, and dedicated a waniguchi (a large, disc-shaped bell). That waniguchi remains even now as a shrine treasure.
The enshrined deities of Yukura Shrine are "Ōnamuchi-no-mikoto" and "Sukuna-bikona-no-kami". Both cooperated in the nation-building of Japan and the management of the land, and are said to have established therapies for diseases for humans and livestock. Regarding health and longevity, marital harmony, and safe childbirth, one can especially receive divine virtues, and furthermore, it is also known as a deity for abundant harvests, business prosperity, matchmaking, child-rearing, and so on.
