SPOT
Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine
In 1864, when the Goryokaku fortress was completed, the shrine was dedicated in present-day Kamiyama 3-chome, the demon's gate in the northeastern part of Japan, as a protection for the Ezo region. When the shrine was destroyed by fire during the Hakodate War, the sacred body barely survived, and the shrine was moved several times from one place to another in the city. In the precincts of the shrine, there is a water bowl that still bears bullet holes from the Hakodate War and a guardian dog that was damaged in the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934, which tell visitors about the shrine's history.
