SPOT
Goryokaku Park
The star-shaped Goryokaku ruins have been designated a special national historic site. It was the site of the Battle of Hakodate, the final battle of the Boshin War. Goryokaku was the last stronghold for the former shogunate forces led by Enomoto Takeaki and Hijikata Toshizo. It is more commonly known as Goryokaku Park. The restored Hakodate Magistrate's Office is also worth seeing.
In spring, it is a famous cherry blossom spot, and in winter, the area around the moat is decorated with illuminations. Currently, there are about 1,500 flowers in bloom. When the petals fall, the surface of the moat is covered with petals, creating a "flower raft," which offers a different atmosphere to when the flowers are in full bloom. Around the long holidays, the area is bustling with local residents who gather to view the cherry blossoms. In addition to the cherry blossoms, there are also beautiful flowers such as wisteria, azalea, and water lilies.
The perimeter of the moat is a promenade about 1,800 meters long, and many locals can be seen jogging and walking along it. In winter, snow piles up on the frozen moat, creating a mysterious world. Goryokaku Park offers beautiful views in all four seasons. If you're visiting Hakodate, be sure to take a leisurely stroll around the park.
