SPOT
Goryokaku Park
The star-shaped castle "Goryokaku Ruins" is designated as a special national historic site. It was the site of the final battle of the Boshin War, the Battle of Hakodate. Goryokaku was the last stronghold for the former Shogunate forces led by Enomoto Takeaki and Hijikata Toshizo. It is more commonly known as Goryokaku Park. The restored Hakodate Magistrate's Office is also worth seeing.
In spring, it is a famous cherry blossom spot, and in winter, the moat is decorated with illuminations. Currently, about 1,500 trees are in bloom. When the petals fall, the surface of the moat is covered with petals, creating a "flower raft," which offers a different atmosphere from when the flowers are in full bloom. Around the long holidays, the area is bustling with local residents who gather to view the flowers. In addition to the cherry blossoms, wisteria, azaleas, water lilies and other flowers are also beautiful.
The perimeter of the moat is a promenade about 1,800 meters long, and many locals can be seen jogging and walking on it. In winter, the frozen moat is covered in snow, creating a mysterious world. Goryokaku Park offers beautiful scenery in every season. If you have a chance to visit Hakodate, be sure to take a leisurely stroll around the park.
