SPOT
Tomata Coast
Atsugishi-Do Nature Park was designated as a natural park in 1955, and although there are many famous scenic spots, there are still some unexplored places of interest that few people know about.
Tomata Coast is one such place, which used to be famous as a place to dry herring. Unlike spring herring, which were caught in large numbers along the Japan Sea coast from late March to early May, the Tomata Coast is home to herring that spawn in the bay, called Atsukishi herring, and migratory herring from the Nemuro area, with very few catches in recent years.
On the Tomata coast today, there are no herring trawls or sandy beaches that were a treasure trove of shellfish. Eroded by waves, fishing houses have been built to cling to the cliffs, and block embankments to prevent quicksand continue endlessly.
The road to this place is a narrow terraced road, but it is rather traveler-friendly, and the view of the whole of Atsugishi-Bay, Cape Shiriba, Daikoku Island, Kojima, Cape Aikan, and the Atsugishi-Ohashi Bridge is truly breathtaking.
