Port Literature Museum
The Port Literature Museum, which opened in the former Seamen's Hall in 1988 with the cooperation of citizens, was relocated to the former Providence in 2013 and reopened with a new café space and other facilities!
Muroran, a city of literature as well as industry, has produced three Akutagawa Prize-winning writers, Yoshinori Yagi, Kiyohiro Miura, and Yu Nagashima. The Port Literature Museum has a memorial room for him and a library (12,000 volumes in all). In addition, the museum also exhibits manuscripts and photographs by cultural celebrities (novelists, comic book writers, etc.) who were born in Muroran and are still active today, allowing visitors to trace the origins of literature in Muroran and see their footprints. Books and postcards related to Muroran are also available for sale.
