SPOT
Sakura Falls
This waterfall is 2.5m high, and in spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and from June to August, cherry salmon jump over the falls. Cherry salmon are Yamame (called Yamabe in Hokkaido), known as the queen of mountain streams, which go down to the sea, grow big, and then return to rivers to spawn. They can be seen swimming upstream in rivers along the Sea of Japan coast and in northern Japan, but places where they jump over such a large waterfall are rare worldwide. With strength, timing, location, and luck, only a few fish succeed in jumping over the falls, but watching them jump with all their might will make you want to cheer them on.
In June when they first start to jump, their bodies shine silver, but as spawning approaches in August, their bodies gradually turn pink. They finish spawning in September, and like other salmon, they pass on their life to the next generation.
