Mure-jima Island
Overview
The heartbreaking sunset that stains Mure-jima Island may originate from a sad love story that has been passed down there.
In some time ago, Utako, an island girl living on Kamui Aside, fell in love with Seijiro, who came from Noto Province, but they were separated by Seijiro's betrayal. Soon after, a monk named Muhen arrived on the island, offered a long mourning service for Utako, and went to Murozu Island to fast and sit in zazen meditation. A few days later, the monk was swallowed by the waves when the sea became rough, and he washed ashore on the island that would later be called "Mutenjima," still clutching his prayer beads. Legend has it that this monk was Seijiro, who deeply regretted his betrayal of Utako.
