Notsuke Peninsula
Overview
Located halfway between the Shiretoko and Nemuro peninsulas, the Notsuke Peninsula stretches out like an arm into the Sea of Okhotsk. It is the largest sand spit in Japan, with a total length of about 26 km. A sand spit is a landform created by the accumulation of sand carried by ocean currents over many years. The complex, indented coastline created by erosion by ocean currents is one of the reasons why the Notsuke Peninsula nurtures such a diverse range of life.
Additionally, the ocean floor off the coast of Notsuke Peninsula is rugged and has fast currents, making it one of Hokkaido's leading fishing grounds.
