Kyowa Town is a nature-rich town located in the central part of the Shiribeshi Subprefecture in Hokkaido, approximately 90 kilometers from Sapporo City and 50 kilometers from Otaru City. It is surrounded on three sides—north, east, and south—by the majestic Mount Yotei and the Niseko mountain range, and faces the Sea of Japan to the west. Due to its topography surrounded by mountains, the climate is relatively mild, and blessed with moderate rainfall in the summer, it has developed as one of the leading agricultural regions representing the Southern Hokkaido area.
The specialty products nurtured by this rich natural environment, such as watermelons, melons, rice, and sweet corn, are widely known as the high-quality "Raiden" brand. Another attraction is its abundant nature, which shows dramatic changes with the seasons. The mystical "Shinsennuma," acclaimed as the most beautiful among the lakes and marshes of the Niseko mountain system, invites visitors into a fantastical world.
The town is also vibrant with culture and events. In the urban area, there is the Kazuo Nishimura Memorial Museum of Art, dedicated to the locally born painter who was active in Paris, where you can appreciate numerous works full of individuality. Furthermore, in the summer, the town's major event, the "Kyowa Scarecrow Festival," is held, bustling with activities such as a contest featuring over one hundred unique handmade scarecrows and Ban'ei horse racing. It is a charming town where the blessings of great nature, rich food, and warm art harmonize.
