This Isn't a Mega-Portion, It's the Regular Size! Nanporo Onsen's "Cabbage Tendon" is Mind-Blowing!

When you think of onsen (hot spring) facilities, one of the joys is relaxing at the restaurant. However, at "Nanporo Onsen Heart & Heart" (hereafter Nanporo Onsen) in Nanporo Town, there's a specialty dish so famous that some people visit just for the food. We decided to order this menu item, which has been hailed as the "absolute ace."

Nanporo Onsen is located about a 45-minute drive from central Sapporo. It's quite a large facility, complete with a hotel. The parking lot is spacious too!
Of course, we were curious about the hot springs, but first, we headed to the restaurant inside the facility to meet the famous dish. It's very considerate that you don't need to pay an entrance fee if you're only using the restaurant.
The restaurant is called "Restaurant Ajishin." Upon entering and looking at the menu, it was immediately obvious which dish was the specialty. At the very top, it was described as the "undisputed, most popular ace." We ordered it and waited in excitement. A few minutes later, this appeared!
This is the famous "Cabbage Tendon" (1,000 yen including tax). Three massive pieces of tempura, made of cabbage fried kakiage-style, are towering over the bowl. Just having it brought to the table is an impressive sight.
The Cabbage Tendon comes with sauce already drizzled on it, but it also includes a side of tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce), so you can enjoy it in two different ways. The pro-tip is to move the tempura to the small side dish provided to make it easier to eat.

The tempura has a crispy texture and is surprisingly light, with a hint of sweetness from the cabbage. Cabbage is a specialty product of Nanporo Town, and you'll likely find yourself finishing the first piece in no time.
That said, three giant pieces of tempura, each the size of an adult's palm, are quite a handful. But don't worry if you can't finish it all; you can ask the staff for a takeaway container. By the way, there's also a shrimp tempura hidden in there, so try to find it as you eat.
And of course, since you've come all this way, you can't miss the onsen. Let's take a relaxing soak in the main public bath, which was renovated in 2018. Nanporo Onsen features a natural chloride spring with water flowing directly from the source. It will warm you to the core.
The indoor bath area also has a radon bath, which is rare in Hokkaido, and an oxygen bath with microbubbles that improve blood circulation. Top it all off with a sauna session, and you couldn't ask for more. Delicious specialty food and a comfortable hot spring.

To think you can experience a slice of heaven just a short drive from Sapporo... you simply have to go!
