Shiretoko is known for its rich natural environment, so much so that it has been registered as a World Natural Heritage site. Have you ever heard of "Freepe Falls" in Shiretoko? It is a mysterious waterfall that seeps out of a precipitous cliff and flows down to the sea. We have researched the Freepe Falls, also known as "Maiden's Tears.

The Furepe Falls are located on the Utoro side of the Shiretoko Peninsula, near the base of the peninsula. It is located west of the Shiretoko Five Lakes. A walking trail has been developed from the Shiretoko Nature Center, so we recommend walking there.

From the Shiretoko Nature Center, a 20-minute (about 1 km) one-way walk along the promenade brings you to the observation deck of Hlepe Falls.
The view from the observation deck looks like this.

The Hlepe Falls cascading down the precipitous cliffs are spectacular, but with the Shiretoko mountain range in the distance and the Sea of Okhotsk at your feet, you can feel the vast nature of Shiretoko all around you just by standing on this observation platform.

To explain the origins of Frepée Falls once again, Frepée Falls was originally formed when groundwater seeped out from the mountains in the middle of a 100-meter-high sheer cliff. The waterfalls are flowing down directly into the Sea of Okhotsk. The waterfall is also known as "Maiden's Tears" because of its gentle flow.

The Shiretoko Shari-cho Nature Center is located in the Shiretoko Shari-cho area, where the leaves turn red in the fall and freeze in the winter, offering different views in each season. The walking trail starting from the Shiretoko Nature Center takes about 40 minutes (about 2 km) for a round trip. Especially the first half of the trail to the observatory passes through a forest with remnants of the pioneer days, and just strolling along the trail is a refreshing experience. The first half of the trail to the observatory, in particular, passes through a forest that is a remnant of pioneer days.
You can even see Ezo sika deer grazing on the grass, making this a course that brings you closer to the nature of Shiretoko. The process of getting to the destination, Hlepe Falls, is also sure to be thoroughly enjoyable.

If you visit the Shiretoko Peninsula, why not make this a part of your itinerary? Please note, however, that the trail may be closed due to the presence of brown bears.
