The magazine "northern style SLOW", which promotes "exciting Hokkaido", is now in store! "SLOW living", a select shop with a focus on Hokkaido, has opened in Obihiro!
The store has a natural and lovely atmosphere and is packed with a variety of wonderful crafts and foods from all over Hokkaido that Slow has covered in the past.
It is a select shop where you can actually see, touch and purchase crafts that you can feel the warmth of the hands, such as woodwork, pottery and candles, as well as carefully selected delicious goods such as bread, cheese, tea and coffee. It is amazing that there are products from over 100 makers on display. This is an irresistible space for Slow fans, as the world they have enjoyed in magazines can now actually be seen unfolding before their eyes.
SLOW is a magazine that has been reporting on Hokkaido lifestyles, things, and people for over 18 years. We spoke to the SLOW editorial team about what led them to open a store and what products they currently recommend!
-What was the reason that the SLOW editorial team, who have been producing the magazine up until now, decided to open a store?
I had been thinking for a long time about opening a shop that collected products from all the makers featured on SLOW, but I had never been able to find a suitable location. One day, someone suggested that they could use a building on the company's premises that had been used as a warehouse. It was about 40 years old, but it looked like it could be used if it was renovated! Things sped up from there, and they were able to open in about six months.
--What products would you especially recommend for this season?
The "Umeko Geta Exhibition" is a special exhibition being held in June. Umeko Yano, who lives in Shimokawa Town, has been introducing handmade geta in the pages of SLOW every year since it was first published. Even at over 70 years old, Umeko's passion for craftsmanship remains strong. Her geta are made entirely by hand, from sawing the wood, and are carefully designed for practical use, with exquisite curves on the bottom and soft straps. There are many modern patterns, and they can be worn with yukata and kimono, as well as dresses and jeans. There are about 30 types of geta, all of which are one-of-a-kind. Please pick up the actual geta, try them on, and experience the lightness of Umeko geta.
