Iwamizawa City

Iwamizawa Park" in Iwamizawa City is a large-scale urban park covering an area of approximately 183 hectares. Within the park grounds, there are numerous facilities, including an amusement park, Hokkaido Greenland, a campground, and a park golf course. The rose garden, which covers an area of 40,000 square meters, is particularly impressive! In fact, 8,800 roses of about 630 varieties are cultivated here.

The park is divided into several gardens and zones, each with its own theme. The best time to see the roses is from mid-June to mid-July and from mid-September to mid-October, depending on the variety, and many people visit during the season.

The rose garden at Iwamizawa Park is amazing in that it aims to be entirely pesticide-free, without relying on chemical pesticides, and has been spraying plant-derived extracts since 2013 to prevent disease and insect damage.

Touring the various gardens as if strolling through a flower garden, one is reminded once again of the charm of roses. For example, in the "Old Rose Alley," newly opened in 2013, visitors can see about 180 varieties of old roses, including original varieties. With their classical flower shapes and fine fragrance, they seem to enchant visitors.

A short walk from the rose garden is the "Color Pavilion," where vine roses are cultivated. It is one of the largest in Hokkaido, where about 20 varieties of vine roses can be seen!

However, the best time to see them is from mid-March to mid-May, so unfortunately the season is over for this year (2022). Please visit next year or later to see the lovely vines.

Also recommended is the "Hamanasu Hill," which has been maintained since 1995. You may be thinking, "Why a hamanasu in a rose garden?" You may be wondering, "Why a rose garden?" But in fact, the Hamanasu is a species of rose native to Hokkaido.

The Hamanasu no Oka collection boasts a collection of rose bushes from 60 cities, towns, and villages in Hokkaido. In addition to enjoying the differences between them, visitors can also feel comfortable just standing there on the small hill.

Surrounded by roses, you cannot help but feel that they are special flowers with their gorgeous and noble charm. Why not see many kinds of roses and feel gorgeous?
