A Breathtaking Flower Paradise! Discover the Charm of Iwamizawa Park's Rose Garden

Located in Iwamizawa City, Iwamizawa Park is a massive urban park spanning approximately 183 hectares. The grounds feature numerous facilities, including the Hokkaido Greenland amusement park, a campground, and a park golf course. Among these, the 40,000-square-meter rose garden is truly spectacular! It boasts an incredible 8,800 rose bushes from about 630 different varieties.

The garden is divided into several themed gardens and zones, allowing visitors to see roses curated for each area. The best times to see the roses vary by variety but are generally from mid-June to mid-July and from mid-September to mid-October, attracting many visitors during these peak seasons.

What makes the Iwamizawa Park Rose Garden especially impressive is its commitment to becoming completely pesticide-free, relying on natural methods instead of chemical pesticides. Since 2013, they have been preventing pests and diseases by spraying plant-based extracts.

Strolling through the various gardens like a flower field tour will give you a newfound appreciation for the charm of roses. For example, the "Old Rose Path," newly created in 2013, features about 180 varieties of old roses, including wild species. Their classic shapes and exquisite fragrances seem to cast a spell on all who visit.

At the "Shikisaikan" (Color Pavilion), a short walk from the rose garden, you can find climbing roses. With about 20 varieties, it is one of the largest collections of climbing roses in Hokkaido!

However, their peak viewing season is from mid-March to mid-May, so this year's season has unfortunately ended. Be sure to visit next year to see these lovely climbing roses.

We also recommend the "Hamanasu Hill," established in 1995. You might wonder, "Why Hamanasu in a rose garden?" but the Hamanasu (Japanese rose or rugosa rose) is actually a wild rose species native to Hokkaido.

Hamanasu Hill boasts a collection of Hamanasu roses from 60 different municipalities across Hokkaido, which were provided from their native habitats. Not only can you enjoy the subtle differences between them, but the hill itself is a pleasant spot to stand and enjoy the gentle breeze.

Surrounded by these countless roses, you can't help but feel that they are truly special flowers, with their vibrant and noble charm. Why not immerse yourself in a gorgeous atmosphere by viewing the many varieties of roses?
