Otaru City

When you think of Mt. Tengu in Otaru, many people might picture a ski resort. But in reality, the mountaintop is packed with fun activities and sights to see, even in the summer! Let's take a look.

While you can hike to the summit of Mt. Tengu, it can be a bit challenging for those not used to it, so taking a car or the ropeway is recommended. Once you arrive, first pay a visit to the Otaru Tenguyama Shrine. This is a venerable shrine dedicated to Sarutahiko Okami, the deity said to be the origin of the tengu legends. Pray for a safe and fun day of activities.

Next, head near the shrine to meet the "Nose-rubbing Tengu." It is said that if you make a wish while rubbing the Nose-rubbing Tengu's large nose, your wish will come true. Interestingly, the way you rub the nose differs depending on your wish, such as gently rubbing the tip of the nose for a safe childbirth. Be sure to check the sign next to it for instructions!

Now that you've made your wishes, it's time to have some fun! How about soaring through the air on the "TENGUU Zipline" while looking down on the city of Otaru? Gliding through the sky with a stunning view as your backdrop is a truly rare experience.

The 400-meter-long "Tenguyama Slider" is another popular attraction. You can control the speed of the bobsled yourself, making it enjoyable for everyone from children to adults. The slow, automated ride to the starting point is also lovely, with the chirping of wild birds in the background.

You can even ride in a hot air balloon! From the Family Ski Slope at an altitude of 530 meters, the "TENGUU Hot Air Balloon" takes you another 30 meters up into the sky. The grand panoramic view from up there will create an irreplaceable memory. The TENGUU Zipline, Tenguyama Slider, and TENGUU Hot Air Balloon are all paid attractions available only in the summer, so be sure to check the official website!

After enjoying the attractions, why not interact with some cute little animals? Mt. Tengu has a "Chipmunk Park," and admission is free.

The chipmunks scurrying around your feet are simply adorable! You can buy feed for 300 yen, place it down, and wait for them to come and eat. This park is also only open in the summer, as the chipmunks hibernate in winter.

When you're tired from all the fun, take a break at "TENGUU CAFE." The recommended item is the "Tengu Soft-serve" (400 yen including tax). The karinto, a fried dough snack shaped like a tengu's nose, surprisingly pairs well with the soft-serve ice cream.

In the shop attached to the cafe, you'll find the "Tengu's Tall Geta Sandals." It is said that if you gently stand on these tall geta and pray quietly, the tengu will clear a path for you and grant your wishes. Since geta sandals work as a pair, they are also said to bring luck in finding a partner.

Beyond the tall geta is the entrance to the "Otaru Ski Museum." Passing through the museum, you will reach the "Tengu House." Displayed here are about 700 large and small items related to tengu, collected from all over Japan. The wall covered in tengu masks is particularly breathtaking.

The projection mapping inspired by Mt. Tengu is also quite impressive. Many people might be surprised to find that Mt. Tengu is so full of highlights and attractions. We hope you have a wonderful time at Mt. Tengu!
