Even That Animal?! A Guide to Hokkaido's Unique "Animal Crossing" Signs
Horses: More Than Just Thoroughbreds
Hokkaido is Japan's leading horse breeding region, with many thoroughbreds coming mainly from the Hidaka region. People born in Hokkaido are sometimes called "Dosanko," which is originally the name of a horse breed. This shows the deep connection with horses since the pioneering days of Hokkaido.
With attractions like "Ban'ei Horse Racing," which can only be seen in Hokkaido, and spots for horse riding and trekking, this sign can be considered unique to Hokkaido.
Squirrels: A Park Favorite
Two species of squirrels, the Ezo squirrel and the Ezo chipmunk, inhabit Hokkaido. As their names suggest, they are native species that can only be found in Hokkaido. Most chipmunks seen outside of Hokkaido are exotic species, such as escaped pets that have gone wild, and are different from the Ezo chipmunk. You can often see their adorable figures in parks, but if you see a sign, be careful not to run them over.
Red-crowned Cranes: A Natural Monument
You probably won't see this sign anywhere else in Japan but Hokkaido. The red-crowned crane, designated as the "Bird of Hokkaido," can be seen in the Eastern Hokkaido area and is protected as a special natural monument. Their elegant posture and the graceful sight of them flying with their large wings spread are captivating, but be careful not to get distracted while driving if you encounter one.
In addition to the ones introduced here, there are also signs for foxes and raccoon dogs! Thanks to these signs, you can feel the abundance of wildlife even while driving. Let's take pride in such nature-rich Hokkaido and strive for safe, relaxed driving.
