The popular movie "Detective Conan: The Million Dollar Goryokusei" has been a huge hit, and here are some of the places in Hakodate where the movie was set for pilgrimages to the holy land. Let's step into the world of the movie by touring Goryokaku Park, Mount Hakodate Observation Deck, and other locations where Conan Edogawa, Heiji Hattori, Phantom Thief Kid, and other characters ran around.

1. Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse (in front of Hakodate West Wharf)

金森赤レンガ倉庫

Hakodate West Wharf Mae, where the movie was set, is located near the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouses, a symbol of the Hakodate Bay Area. Located in the bay area of Hakodate City, the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouses are a representative tourist attraction of Hakodate with its history as an international trading port. 1909, the warehouses were rebuilt and still remain, and are now used as a shopping mall, beer hall and event hall, attracting many tourists throughout the year.

The Hakodate History Plaza, Kanamori Hall, Kanamori Yokomonokan, and BAY Hakodate are all located within the facilities, along with a variety of stores and restaurants. Large-scale events such as the "Hakodate Christmas Fantasy" are also held during the winter season.

2. Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall

旧函館区公会堂

Built in 1910, the former Hakodate Ward Public Hall is a masterpiece of Western-style architecture from the Meiji era, and was restored to its original appearance through extensive conservation and repairs in 2021. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, the building features a blend of Japanese and Western design, and the second-floor guest rooms are so lavishly decorated that they have even been used by members of the Imperial Family.

When you visit, be sure to dress up in a long dress or high-collar style costume in the Costume Hall, explore the historic building in an elegant mood, and enjoy the spectacular view from the balcony overlooking the harbor.

3. Mount Hakodate Observatory (Mount Hakodate Ropeway)

Mount Hakodate Observation Deck offers a spectacular view of Hakodate and the surrounding area, and is a popular spot for all visitors. From the ground, the aerial ropeway ride takes only 3 minutes. From the rooftop observation deck, visitors can view the city of Hakodate, the Tsugaru Straits, and Mt. Hakodate from all directions, and the seasonal beauty of the mountain at night is known as the "Million Dollar Nightscape.

The first floor of the observatory houses the summit station and waiting lobby, while the restaurant on the second floor and tea lounge on the third floor allow visitors to enjoy the view while eating and drinking.

Goryokaku Park

Goryokaku Park is known as the site of the Hakodate War, the final battle of the Boshin War, and was the last stronghold of the former shogunate forces, including Takeaki Enomoto and Toshizo Hijikata. The park is called Goryokaku because of its star-shaped pentagonal appearance. In spring, the park is decorated with approximately 1,530 cherry trees and other flowers, and is crowded with many citizens during major holidays. Visitors are especially moved by the sight of "Hanakada (flower rafts)," in which cherry blossom petals scattered on the moat cover the surface of the water.

五稜郭公園

The restored Hakodate Magistrate's Office is also a highlight of the park, and there is a walking trail in the park that is perfect for strolling and relaxation.

Goryokaku Tower

Goryokaku Tower is a symbol of Hakodate, offering a panoramic view of the star-shaped fortress of Goryokaku. Goryokaku Tower offers spectacular views of Mount Hakodate, the Tsugaru Straits, and the four seasons.

The observation deck is designed in a pentagonal shape, and the Goryokaku Historical Corridor, where visitors can learn more about the history of Goryokaku, and the see-through floor, with its tempered glass floor, are popular among tourists.

6. Hokkaido Toshogu Shrine

北海道東照宮

The precincts of the shrine are home to a water bowl that still bears bullet holes from the Hakodate War and a guardian dog that was damaged in the Great Hakodate Fire of 1934, which tells visitors about the shrine's history. The shrine building was destroyed by fire during the Hakodate War, and the barely surviving sacred body was moved from place to place within the city several times before being relocated to its current location in 1992 and given its current name.

7. Hakodate City Tram Yunokawa Stop

The Hakodate City Tram boasts a history of more than 100 years since it began operation in 1913. It was the first horse-drawn railroad north of Tokyo, and after being electrified in response to citizen demand, it underwent many changes before arriving at its current form. The retro appearance of the train adds color to the Hakodate cityscape.

The Yunokawa stop is located at the entrance to Yunokawa Onsen, known as one of the best hot springs in southern Hokkaido, and a walk around the area is recommended. Together with the tram, visitors can enjoy a tasteful trip to Hakodate's hot springs.

8. Hachimanzaka Slope

Named after the Hakodate Hachiman Shrine, which is said to have once stood on top of the hill, this hill is well known as one of Hakodate's most popular viewing spots. The hill leads from the red brick warehouses to Mount Hakodate, and the view from the bottom of Hakodate West High School at the end of the hill is spectacular.

During the Hakodate Illumination in winter, the street trees and cobblestone pavement are beautifully illuminated, offering different attractions depending on the season.
