Hibari-dō: A Cafe to Enjoy Day and Night with Popular Sweets, Curry, and a Bar for Sapporo Evenings

Tucked away on a backstreet just past Tanukikoji, Hibari-dō is a wildly popular spot that attracts Sapporo's stylish crowd any day of the week. The menu, featuring nostalgic, retro-style dishes like curry, Neapolitan pasta, and pudding, reflects the owner's deep appreciation for the culture of old-school kissaten (coffee shops) and bars from their youth. Let's dive into everything that makes the much-talked-about Hibari-dō so special!

Hibari-dō: Welcoming You for Any Occasion, Day or Night

Hibari-dō

The interior mainly features two-person tables, making it easy to visit alone.◎

This is one of those rare gems where everyone can be happy, whether you're with a friend who doesn't drink, one person is in the mood for dessert, and another wants a full meal. There are no rules for time or occasion—enjoy “wine and crepes” in the afternoon or a late-night “curry” to cap off your evening. It's the perfect spot for a lively girls' night out with close friends or a quiet, relaxing time to yourself.

The “Maze Tsukimi Curry” has a secret fan base.

Hibari-dō has many signature dishes, and curry is one of them. There are about five types of curry, each with a different base and its own unique character. The lineup includes the “Spice Chicken Curry,” with an aroma that whets the appetite; the “Minced Lamb and Herb Curry,” a perfect match of herbs and lamb; the “Showa-style Katsu Curry,” offering a taste of Showa-era nostalgia and generous portions; the “Maze Tsukimi Curry,” a risotto-like curry with a rich spice base mixed with Yumepirika rice direct from farmers; and the flavorful “Shrimp and Coconut Curry.”

The Friday-only “Friday Neapolitan” for 880 yen.

Additionally, the special Friday-only menu item, “Friday Neapolitan,” is said to have regulars who visit weekly just for this dish. The chewy, thick pasta, created with a unique cooking method, pairs perfectly with homemade smoked bacon and a sweet ketchup sauce.

The “Indulgent Course”: Enjoy Popular Desserts and Lunch

Hibari-dō

For first-time visitors, we recommend the “Hibari-dō's Special Course,” which lets you sample the cafe's most popular items. This luxurious set includes the curry of the day (half size), your choice of crepe, a Hokkaido Custard Pudding (half size), and a drink—a perfect way to try a little bit of everything that ladies love.

A half-size portion of the “Hokkaido Custard Pudding.”

The half-size portions of curry and pudding in the set are a thoughtful touch for female customers. The pudding is firm and boasts a natural flavor, made simply with Hokkaido ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar. It's the most popular dessert at the cafe.

“Shin Crepe”: Addictively Chewy Crepes and Rich Cream

“Shin Crepe - Whipped Cream & Maple Butter” for 990 yen.

Besides the pudding, another popular item is the “Shin Crepe,” which you can also choose in the “Hibari-dō's Special Course.” You just have to try it to believe how delicious it is! The chewy crepe is made with plenty of buttermilk sourced directly from Okoppe Town in Hokkaido and is left to rest overnight. The edges are cooked to a delightful crisp. You can choose from five types of Shin Crepe, including a simple Whipped Cream & Butter, Custard Lemon, and other limited-time options.

Enjoy a Sophisticated Evening with an Extensive Alcohol Menu

Hibari-dō

While perfect for lunch and tea time, Hibari-dō transforms into a bar at night. We recommend spending a relaxing evening with a book in hand, sipping on delicious craft beer, cocktails, or natural wine. The showcase is lined with an array of craft beers and natural wines from both within and outside Hokkaido.

The alcohol is sourced from all over Japan, not just Hokkaido, and the lineup changes with the seasons.

The craft beer selection isn't listed on the menu, so ask the staff or browse the showcase to make your choice! The carefully written descriptions are fun to read, and you'll be spoiled for choice. The lineup changes seasonally, so look forward to discovering new finds with each visit.

Hibari-dō

You can buy items individually, but the “Hibari-dō's 3-Dessert Set” (1,890 yen) is a great deal!

Another great feature is the extensive selection of takeout desserts! Why not treat yourself and take home popular items like the “Hokkaido Custard Pudding” or the “Hokkaido An-Butter Scone Sandwich”? For lunch, a coffee break, a drink at the bar, or takeout—Hibari-dō has it all. Be sure to pay a visit!
