While driving along National Route 336, you will come across the mysterious sight of several waterfalls flowing along the side of the road. These waterfalls, named "Fumbe Waterfalls," amaze and delight us as we pass by. We investigated why this waterfall was formed and the origin of its name. Let's start by writing down the exact location. Funbe Falls can be seen along the national highway in the Funbe area, about a five-minute drive from Hiroo Bridge towards Erimo. The waterfall flows right next to the road, so if you're driving along without knowing, you might be surprised by its sudden appearance. And it's not just one waterfall, but many, many waterfalls stretching out for an astounding 150 meters. It's a rare sight that you won't see anywhere else. In fact, Funbe Falls is a spring of groundwater. Unlike a normal waterfall, the water does not flow down the cliff from the upstream, but if you look closely, you can see that the water flows out from the middle of the rock face. If you look even more closely, you will see that the water does not just flow down the rock face, but in some places there are several streams of groundwater that drip straight down like a curtain. By the way, have you ever wondered about the name Funbe Falls? Apparently, it was named Funbe, which means "beach where whales are caught" in the Ainu language, because whales used to wash up around here in the past. By the way, the road where Funbe Falls is located is commonly known as the "Golden Road." The 33.529km stretch from Oshirabetsu, Hiroo Town to Shoya, Erimo Town was named this way because construction was once difficult and so much money was spent on the road as if it were paved with gold. Funbe Falls, which can be seen while driving on the Golden Road, is a sight to behold in the summer and turns into icicles in the winter, providing a delightful sight of natural beauty all around us. If you have the opportunity to pass by, why not take note of this unique sight? However, please be careful while driving. ▼For more information, please see the Domingo spot page.
