Niagara Falls is a well-known tourist attraction in North America. Did you know that there is a Niagara Falls in Hokkaido?
Niagara is Niagara, but it is the "Otaki Niagara Falls" located in Date City. Don't be disappointed. Even though it is not as good as the real Niagara, it is still a very relaxing negative ion spot.
Date City, where the Otaki Niagara Falls are located, is situated between the cities of Sapporo and Hakodate. Local people used to call it "Petit Niagara Falls," "Otaki Petit Niagara," or "Niagara," as they liked, but in recent years the name "Otaki Niagara Falls" has been unified. This is why the signage still says "Niagara".
Otaki Niagara Falls is located in the Otaki Sports Park. There is a walking course that can be accessed from the park's parking lot, and the falls come into view after about a 1-km, 15-minute walk. Incidentally, the walking course is laid with wood chips, making it easy to walk, and is surrounded by greenery. You may be healed both mentally and physically before arriving at the waterfall.
Now, Otaki Niagara Falls is 100 meters wide and has a drop of about 5 meters. It is one of the waterfalls on the Nagaregawa River, which flows into Eruption Bay. Depending on your point of view, it may look like the real Niagara Falls, such as the wide river width and the many cascading waterfalls.
No, it may be nonsense to compare the two. Otaki Niagara Falls has an atmosphere that can only be experienced here.
In fact, it is a spot that is not well known even among Hokkaido residents except for locals, so if you want to go sightseeing in a place that is a bit off the beaten path, I highly recommend it. The seasonal nature, the sound of the falls, and the negative ions will surely refresh you.
