What you see in the photo are seals that, from a distance, look just like rocks. Upon closer inspection, you can see them relaxing in their own ways, with some even seeming to look this way. It's an incredibly charming sight.
Seals That Look Just Like Rocks, Encountered at the Foggy Cape Erimo
The seals GacchiRika photographed at Cape Erimo on this trip
The photographer, GacchiRika, travels all over Japan in search of seals. This photo was taken in May 2026 while aboard the "Kombu Boat Cruise" that operates at Cape Erimo.
GacchiRika, who participated in the cruise over two days, recalls the experience: "It was so moving to see so many seals in the mystical, foggy scenery."
Located at the southeasternmost tip of Hokkaido, Cape Erimo is known as one of Japan's foremost habitats for harbor seals. The sight of these seals, camouflaged like rocks, reminds us of the wonders of nature and the rich environment of Hokkaido.
