Ashiribetsu Falls: A Breathtaking Stop on Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls List
Ashiribetsu Falls is located within Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, Hokkaido's only national government park. It's about a 50-minute drive from central Sapporo, so many Sapporo residents may have fond memories of visiting on school trips. The falls are in the park's Keiryu (Mountain Stream) Zone, which spans 400 hectares along the Atsubetsu River.
Ashiribetsu Falls has a drop of 26 meters, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in Sapporo. When you see it in person, you can truly feel its power and force. Waterfalls are often described as either masculine or feminine, and Ashiribetsu Falls is decidedly masculine. Just watching the splashing water cascade down is enough to give you an invigorating, refreshing feeling.
Interestingly, it begins to freeze around December and becomes a magnificent frozen waterfall in the middle of winter. This is a sight unique to the waterfalls of Japan's northern regions and is definitely worth seeing. To get to Ashiribetsu Falls, you'll need to walk about 1 km from the Keiryu-guchi parking lot, but the path is well-maintained for walking even in winter, so you can visit with peace of mind.
Ashiribetsu Falls is also selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. There's a bus from Makomanai Station on the Subway Namboku Line, so you don't need a car to get there. It's amazing that you can encounter such a spectacular sight just a short trip from Sapporo's city center. It's a must-visit spot!
