Masumi Falls: Popular for its Elegant, Thread-like Appearance
Today, we introduce one of these four falls in Takino Suzuran Hillside Park: Masumi Falls. Why not head out for a stroll and enjoy the cool, refreshing air?
The Takino Suzuran Hillside National Government Park covers a vast area of 400 hectares, where you can see four different waterfalls. These include Ashiribetsu Falls, which is on the list of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, Fudo Falls (currently closed due to heavy rain damage), Shiraho Falls, and the one we are featuring today, Masumi Falls. Masumi Falls is said to be so charming that some people even prefer it over Ashiribetsu Falls.
The name Masumi Falls (鱒見の滝, literally "trout-watching falls") is said to come from a legend about trout swimming upstream. When they reached this waterfall, they realized it was impossible to climb and could only gaze up at it in defeat. The falls are 18 meters high and 20 meters wide. It is an elegant waterfall that spreads gently over a smooth rock face. It's easy to see why its appeal rivals that of the powerful Ashiribetsu Falls.
When you look at Masumi Falls from the front, you'll see that it flows in two separate streams, one on the left and one on the right. One of its charms is how its appearance changes with the seasons, with the left stream sometimes flowing stronger, and at other times, the right stream taking precedence.
Within the vast Takino Suzuran Hillside Park, the closest parking lot to Masumi Falls is the Masumiguchi Parking Lot (fee required). From there, it's about a 700-meter walk to your destination. Even at a leisurely pace, enjoying the surrounding nature along the walking path, you'll arrive in about 15 minutes.
You can get close enough to feel the spray, so it's a perfect spot for those who want to experience negative ions and refresh their mind and body. Exploring all the waterfalls in the park could be a great idea too.
