Tomakomai Sun Garden, a relaxing place to spend time surrounded by wonderful plants
Tomakomai Sun Garden was built in 1988. It has an all-glass roof, and even from the outside one can imagine the pleasant sunlight that pours down on a sunny day. I am told that the exterior design was inspired by the image of water flowing through the earth and snow crystals shining in the wave caps.
When you actually step inside the building, you can't help but smile at the bright and open space. Although the building is two stories high, it has an atrium-like structure that makes you feel as if you are being showered with light from above. And the numerous plants that fill the space greet you with seasonal flowers and fruits.
There are 1,400 plants of about 80 species that can be seen here, including the greenhouse on the second floor. In order to keep the plants green even during the dead of winter, they have planted those that bloom in winter and those that have fragrances. Therefore, in fact, most of the plants in the museum are those that cannot be found in Hokkaido. So for Hokkaido-area residents, this is a valuable place to enjoy rare plants and flowers.
Specifically, camellia, sasanqua, moso bamboo, camphor tree, loquat, fig, golden osmanthus, etc. Many visitors may have experienced for the first time here, such as seeing the loquat fruits growing and smelling the strong fragrance of the golden osmanthus.
There is a terrace in front of the greenhouse on the second floor, where neighbors eat their lunch here, and it seems to be used as a place for citizens to relax. The indoor temperature of the Tomakomai SunGarden can exceed 20°C even in winter, weather permitting!
We envy our neighbors for being able to relax surrounded by plants while feeling the warmth of the sun. If you visit Tomakomai, you may want to make some time to drop by.
