See Cherry Salmon Running in a Residential Area?! Discover Shojin Kahan Park, a Hidden Gem in Sapporo
Shojin Kahan Park is a long, narrow park that runs along the Shojin River, which flows between Nakanoshima and Hiragishi in Toyohira Ward. From Minami-Hiragishi Station on the Subway Namboku Line, walk about 10 minutes along Shiroishi-Moiwa Dori towards Mt. Moiwa, and you'll see the park entrance. Look for the sign that reads "Shojin Kahan Park."
The Shojin River, selected as one of the "Sapporo Hometown Culture 100" and a recipient of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Design Prize for Excellence, has no concrete embankments. As you walk through Shojin Kahan Park along this beautiful, natural river, your senses will be sharpened by the murmuring of the water, the sunlight filtering through the trees, and the rich scent of green foliage.
The park is surrounded by a residential area, with busy roads at its entrance and exit, yet it offers a strange sense of peace, as if cut off from the hustle and bustle.
Shojin Kahan Park, with its 900-meter walking path on one side of the river, is painted in different colors each season, with cherry blossoms in spring and ginkgo trees in autumn. In winter, the deep snow can make it difficult to walk, but since it's a popular walking course for locals, you can follow the footprints they've left behind.
Also, if you look into the Shojin River during the early autumn season, you might see cherry salmon (sakuramasu) swimming upstream. To encounter such a scene in an area surrounded by residential homes—that's Hokkaido for you!
Shojin Kahan Park also has a small waterfall. If you go up the stairs next to this waterfall, you'll find yourself right next to the Tenjinyama Green Space.
If you enter Shojin Kahan Park from the waterfall side, the nearest station is Sumikawa Station on the Subway Namboku Line. It's truly surprising that you can find such a nature-rich park just a short walk from a subway station.
When you want to escape from the trivialities of daily life, this is a perfect spot to relax and refresh.
