On the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido, there are many spots where you can see the majestic scenery that is typical of Hokkaido. Oshinkoshin Falls, which we will introduce this time, is one of those spots. This waterfall has a rather cute name, but you will be surprised by its power that overturns your image of it!
The unforgettable name "Oshinkoshin Falls" is derived from the Ainu word "O-Shunku-Ushi", which means "a place where Yezo spruce trees grow in clusters." Located in Shari Town, this waterfall has been selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan."
As you head north on National Route 334 towards Shiretoko, a World Heritage Site, you will see a sign on the side of the road that reads "Oshinkoshin Falls." There is a parking lot nearby, so it's an easy place to visit.
After a short walk from the parking lot, you can hear the sound of the waterfall. As you climb the stairs leading to the waterfall, its grandeur gradually comes into focus. These stairs take you to the middle of the waterfall, allowing you to see it directly in front of you.
Oshinkoshin Falls, seen from a distance close enough to be splashed with water, can only be described as magnificent! It has a drop of about 30m. It is also known as the "Twin Beauties Falls" because the waterfall splits into two streams midway through, and you will definitely be overwhelmed by its beauty.
Needless to say, the surrounding scenery is also beautiful. The scenery changes with the seasons, so the same waterfall will surely leave a very different impression if you visit during the season of fresh greenery when the water volume increases with melting snow, or during the season of frozen snow when the water is still flowing.

As mentioned above, Oshinkoshin Falls is one of the "Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan," and is also counted among the Eight Scenic Views of Shiretoko. It is a must-see tourist spot for tourists visiting Shiretoko.

By the way, you can see the Sea of Okhotsk from the parking lot, and during the drift ice season, a view unique to Hokkaido unfolds before your eyes. Why not take a look around the area, as well as the waterfall, and enjoy the dynamism of the naturally rich Shiretoko?
