A spray of water pouring down! The Oshinkoshin Falls from a close distance are a sight to behold!
The unforgettable name "Oshinkoshin Falls" is derived from the Ainu word "o-shunku-usi," which means "a place where Ezo spruces grow in clusters. The waterfall is located in Shari-cho and has been selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan.
If you drive north on Route 334 toward Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage site, you will see a sign on the side of the road that reads "Oshinkoshin Falls. There is a parking lot nearby, making it an easy place to visit.
A short walk from the parking lot and you can already hear the sound of the falls. As you ascend the stairs approaching the waterfall, the grandeur of the waterfall gradually approaches before your eyes. These stairs take you up to the middle height of the waterfall, and it is possible to see the falls directly in front of you.
The Oshinkoshin Falls from a distance that is so close you can almost see the spray, is nothing short of spectacular! The waterfall is also called "Soubi no Taki" (meaning "double beauty waterfall") because the stream splits in two, and you will be overwhelmed by its beauty.
The beauty of the surrounding scenery also goes without saying. The waterfall's appearance changes with the seasons, so those who visit during the fresh green season, when the water volume increases due to melting snow, and those who visit during the snowy season, when it freezes over leaving the stream behind, will surely have a very different impression of the same waterfall.
As mentioned above, Oshinkoshin Falls is one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan" and is also one of the eight most scenic spots in Shiretoko. It is a sightseeing spot that should not be missed when touring Shiretoko.
Incidentally, you can see the Sea of Okhotsk from the parking lot, and during the drift ice season, a unique Hokkaido scene unfolds before your eyes. In addition to the waterfalls, why not take a look around and enjoy the dynamism of Shiretoko's rich natural environment?
