Feel the Spray! The Awe-Inspiring Power of Oshinkoshin Falls Up Close
The unforgettable name "Oshinkoshin Falls" comes from the Ainu phrase "o-sunku-us-i," meaning "where Sakhalin spruce grow in clusters." Located in Shari Town, this waterfall is also selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls."

As you head north on National Route 334 towards Shiretoko, a World Natural Heritage site, you'll see a sign for "Oshinkoshin Falls" on the side of the road. There's also a parking lot nearby, so its easy accessibility is another great feature.

A short walk from the parking lot, and you can already hear the roar of the falls. As you climb the stairs towards the waterfall, its magnificent scale gradually unfolds before your eyes. These stairs take you up to about the midpoint of the falls, allowing for a direct, head-on view.

Seeing Oshinkoshin Falls from a distance close enough to feel the spray is nothing short of spectacular! It has a drop of about 30 meters. It's also known as the "Twin Beauties Waterfall" because the stream splits into two partsway down, and you're sure to be overwhelmed by its beauty.

Needless to say, the surrounding scenery is also stunning. Its appearance changes with the seasons, so someone visiting in early summer when the snowmelt increases the water volume and someone visiting in the snowy season when it freezes over while still flowing will surely have vastly different impressions of the same waterfall.

As mentioned earlier, it is one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls," and it is also counted as one of the "Eight Views of Shiretoko." It's a must-visit spot for any trip to Shiretoko.

By the way, from the parking lot, you can see the Sea of Okhotsk, and during the drift ice season, a scene unique to Hokkaido unfolds before your eyes. In addition to the waterfall, why not take a look around and immerse yourself in the dynamism of Shiretoko's rich nature?
