A straight road stretching toward the sky! A spectacular view of the "Road to Heaven," full of Hokkaido's uniqueness.
The road leading to heaven is located about 15 minutes by car from JR Shiretoko Shari Station. It is a straight road that connects National Routes 334 and 244 with the road, and extends for about 28 km. The starting point on the east side is about 120 meters above sea level, and looking down from there, it appears as if the straight road is being sucked straight up into the sky. It is a road that leads to heaven, as the saying goes.
Incidentally, the starting point was improved in 2018, with a new parking lot for eight cars and a simple deck. Parking is free, but please note that there are no restrooms around.
If you stand on the simple deck, that alone is the best position for taking pictures. Refreshing shots taken during the day when the weather is nice are good, but if you want to try capturing a more fantastic scene, we recommend aiming for dusk.
Especially around the autumnal equinox, you can see the moment when the setting sun sets just ahead of the road leading to the sky. It is as if the road is being sucked into the setting sun, making you hold your breath and watch.
A short distance down the road from the starting point is the "Road Leading to Heaven Observation Deck. There is also a parking space here, so if you would like to take pictures from the observatory, why not stop by?
The road leading to heaven was once a topic of conversation only among riders. Indeed, riding a motorcycle on this single track road must be an exhilarating experience like no other.
Of course, you don't have to be a rider to enjoy this sight. It is an experience unique to Hokkaido that will surely remain in your mind forever.
