A Taste of Hokkaido Farm Life: Dairy Experience in Tsurui Village [Family Workation, Day 3]

You don't want to give up on precious family time, but you also have a responsible and rewarding job. For those who want it all, we're reporting on a monitor tour for a "Workation with Kids" in Tsurui Village, Hokkaido! On Day 3, we get a little peek into the world of dairy farming, the key industry of Tsurui Village.

Participating in this monitor tour is the Niioka family from Sapporo. The family includes mother Yui, father Yukio, and their son Kanata (4 years old). Day 3 of the monitor tour begins!

Leaving Heart'n Tree for a Village Farm

On the third day, we joined a tour to experience dairy farming, Tsurui Village's key industry, right from the morning!
We woke up a little early this day, leaving Heart'n Tree before 7 a.m. to visit a dairy farm within the village.

Here, we get to experience feeding milk to the calves. After putting on vinyl gloves, we bring the milk bottle closer to a calf's mouth, and...

Feeding a calf

The calves drink with incredible strength, and the milk disappears in no time.
"If you let them suck on your hand, you can really feel their power. Please give it a try!" said the farmer.
The father, wearing a vinyl glove, let the calves suck on his fingers and could feel both the strong suction and their soft tongues.

One of the biggest charms is getting to interact with the farming family. We recommend chatting with them about life in Tsurui Village and dairy farming!

Let's Make Cheese with Delicious Milk from Tsurui Village!

After leaving the farm, we head back to Heart'n Tree. You might even spot some red-crowned cranes on the way! Keep an eye out the window as you enjoy the ride.

Once back at Heart'n Tree, it's time for a "string cheese making" experience, using the fresh, delicious milk from the very farm we just visited!

Sachiko-san, the warm host of Heart'n Tree, carefully explains the process and steps of cheese making, making it a super fun activity for everyone, from kids to adults!

"I wonder if I can pull the cheese apart well?" We taste the freshly made cheese. As expected, cheese made together with everyone tastes extra special! We can't stop eating it.

Thank You, Tsurui Village! Heading Back to Sapporo

With many wonderful memories from Tsurui Village, it's time to head back to Sapporo. On the way back, we recommend making a few stops, perhaps at a natural hot spring or for some souvenir shopping.
By the time you leave, you're sure to have fallen in love with Tsurui Village!

An Interview with the Niioka Family After the Monitor Tour!

A workation for a family of three: mother, father, and their 4-year-old son. We asked them what they thought after experiencing the monitor tour!

The environment in Tsurui Village is so exciting for children and helps them grow, so I highly recommend it!
Interacting with the local people, nature, and animals gave our whole family a chance to feel and think about new things.
What was most memorable was how everyone in the village celebrated our son's growth and engaged with our family. As a nuclear family, we don't usually have many adults involved in raising our child, so this was a very heartwarming experience.
Being able to do some light tasks in a natural setting and take breaks in a hot spring between work sessions was a great way to refresh my mind. It reaffirmed my belief that a "workation with kids" that lets you create family memories is a wonderful thing!

We came to the village knowing nothing about it, but it felt as warm and comforting as returning to my hometown.
What really struck me in Tsurui Village was seeing people doing what they love. I strongly felt that the real luxury isn't about having nice things, but about doing what you're passionate about. The scenery, the way time flows—everything was so different from my daily life, and it became an opportunity to reflect on what happiness means.
I also got to see my son grow through his interactions with the villagers. Lying down in the meadows as a family, gathering around a fire to chat with the locals—being able to do those things was fantastic. I have a feeling we'll be back here again!

It was so much fun!
Because I got to feed milk to the baby cows and catch fish all by myself. The goats and dogs were friendly too, and it felt like they became part of our family.
I love Tsurui Village!
