Gateau Frere, a Western-style pastry shop in Zenibako, Otaru, is a popular shop with many locals and people from far away who visit. This is because of the highly impactful product called "clay pot pudding" that has become a hot topic!
However, the owner chef honestly says that it is actually the baked goods that he wants people to try... We decided to visit the shop to find out what that means.
Gateau Frères looks like a pastry shop from a picture book. Its location near the sea is also nice. It opened in front of Zenibako Station in 2002 and moved to its current location in 2015.
Let's start by taking a look at the extremely popular "Clay Pot Pudding." Seeing is believing!
It really is a dreamlike sight, with the clay pot filled with pudding. Fresh cream is squeezed onto a traditional firm pudding, and colorful fruits are spread over it. Pudding in a clay pot sounds like a joke, but it is unexpectedly beautiful and undoubtedly delicious. Please note that there are only 10 pieces per day.
Despite having such a signature product, the owner chef says that he focuses on baked goods. Looking around the store again, it is true that more than half of the store is dedicated to baked goods. (Please note that the store display was decorated for Christmas as it was just before Christmas when we interviewed.)
According to the owner chef, "Baked goods are actually quite complex. After all, once they are taken out of the oven, they are sold as is, without any decoration like cakes. It's interesting precisely because there's no room for manipulation."
This is where the skill of the confectioner really comes into play. If the baked goods are delicious, it's no exaggeration to say that the other products will be delicious as well.
The good thing about baked goods is that they are individually wrapped, so it's easy to buy several different kinds. By the way, the photo above shows "Octopus Cookies" and "Sea Cat Cookies." They are inscribed with the word "ZENIBAKO," making them perfect souvenirs.
The crispy texture and buttery flavor make this a simple yet exquisitely delicious dish. You can only truly appreciate the owner-chef's passion by eating it.
Gateau Frères also sells cakes and cream puffs. The heavy Zenibako Roll Cake, filled with plenty of fresh cream, is a popular item.
Also, the "Mochimochi Cheese" is a cream cheese mousse wrapped in gyuhi together with fresh cream and sponge cake, and you'll be amazed at its unique texture and flavor! Just like the clay pot pudding, you can find such original sweets at Gateau Frères...once again, it's a really fun Western-style pastry shop.
If you visit Zenibako, be sure to stop by.
