Sapporo Piㇼkakotan (Sapporo Ainu Culture Exchange Center)

A hands-on facility where you can experience the history and art of the Ainu people and learn about the indigenous people

An exchange center where you can enjoy and learn about the life, history and art of the Ainu people who first settled in the northern land and developed their own culture. It is the first indigenous people's facility in Japan where visitors can see, touch, and experience numerous traditional Ainu crafts made by the Sapporo Ainu people on site. Sapporo Piㇼkakotan means "beautiful village of Sapporo" in Ainu language. In the exhibition room, approximately 300 items of traditional clothing and folk tools are on display, and visitors can actually hold them in their hands. The Sapporo Ainu Association also offers hands-on Ainu culture classes such as making mukkuri, a traditional musical instrument, and embroidery. (Reservations are required.
