Governor's Residence
Located next to the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the Western-style building is surrounded by lush greenery.
The Governor's Residence was built in 1936 as a villa for the Mitsui Gomei Company and owned by Hokkaido in 1953. Since then, it has been widely used for various meetings and events. The site of a pit dwelling dating back more than 1,000 years remains within the premises, and in addition to the lush nature of the garden, the building is open to the public free of charge. In addition to the brightly contrasting red-and-white exterior, the high-ceilinged, open-plan interior of the building is also impressive. In 1988, the Governor's Palace was selected as one of the "Sapporo Hometown Culture 100" by the City of Sapporo, and in 1999, it was designated as a registered tangible cultural property. In recent years, the building has also been used as a filming location for TV programs.
