The Yoshitaro Migishi Museum of Art, Hokkaido
An art museum like a studio nestled in a wooded garden
This private art museum houses the works of Yoshitaro Migishi, a Sapporo-born artist who rose through the ranks of Japanese modern Western-style painting history like a comet and died young at the age of only 31. The museum opened in 1967 as the "Hokkaido Museum of Art" (the Yoshitaro Migishi Memorial Office) after his bereaved family donated 220 works to Hokkaido, and in 1983, a new museum was built on the present site, incorporating images of Yoshitaro's studio. The museum holds exhibitions of the museum's collection, which displays representative works from the life of Kohtaro Migishi, as well as special exhibitions that examine Migishi's art from various angles, lectures, and music concerts.
