Sapporo City Museum of Archives
The former Sapporo Appellate Court, built in 1926, has a "mirror that illuminates the truth" engraved on its exterior wall.
When you visit the museum, look up at the upper front of the building. If you visit the museum, look up at the top of the building and you will see a blindfolded Greek goddess of law, a scale representing fairness, and a sword of justice engraved on it. The building, which is now open to the public as the Sapporo City Museum, was once used as the Appellate Court. It is the equivalent of today's High Court of Appeals. The carvings on the Ishiyama soft stone walls are proof that this was once the Appellate Court, where the "principles of legal authority and fairness" were upheld.
In 2014, the building was used as one of the venues for the inaugural Sapporo International Art Festival (SIAF). Currently, the museum serves as a base for activities leading up to the next festival, and two rooms within the museum are used to disseminate information on art and culture, conduct workshops, and other activities.
In addition, the museum has other exhibition rooms that can be visited free of charge, including a memorial room for Hiroshi Oba, a cartoonist and painter from Sapporo, and an exhibition room where visitors can learn about the origins of the city of Sapporo. The cherry blossoms behind the museum, which usually bloom in early May, are also a secret pleasure for Sapporo citizens.
