SPOT
Melchen Hill
The "Melchen Hill," with its gently sloping hills and fields, creates a beautiful countryside scene each season. This was also the location for the movie "Dream" directed by the late Akira Kurosawa. The peaceful landscape of fields and sky is an impressive viewpoint. Located along Route 39 from downtown Memanbetsu in the town of Ozora to Abashiri City, it is marked by a tree that stands on top of a small hill.
Fields of potatoes, wheat, beans, beets, and other crops stretch on forever, and the colors of the hills change with the seasons: green in spring, white of the potato flowers in summer, and golden of the wheat in fall, creating many picturesque scenes.
There is also a "Scenic Deck" set up by the East Okhotsk Scenic Byway, which aims to "create a beautiful landscape, a vibrant community, and an attractive tourist space. One of the beautiful landscapes is the countryside from summer to winter and the trees tucked into the snowfield in winter. Looking at the sky in autumn, the reddish sky has a very fantastic hue, and the 360-degree view is so beautiful that you may forget about time. Please visit the Hill of Mercure, where you can see beautiful scenery from season to season.
